Gallasneed and Laretta Weaver Legacy Scholarship
This scholarship was developed in honor of the late MOWA Choctaw tribal leader Gallasneed Weaver and his wife Laretta Weaver. The two met while attending Bacone in the 1950s. Their many years of service have left a lasting legacy in Indian Country. Applicants must be currently attending university and be an enrolled member or descendant of an enrolled member of any "non-federally" recognized tribe (tribes recently federally recognized in New York, Massachusetts and Virginia still qualify for the scholarship!) whose members previously attended a federal or closely related mission Indian boarding school –or- a member of Phi Sigma Nu Fraternity (http://phisigmanu.com/).
This scholarship is funded by the descendants of Jerome Chastang and Cornelia Weaver and James (Chastang) Chestang, Secelar Ray and Maud Ray England.
The applicant must email helphaskell@hotmail.com the following by September 15th of each year:
1. A picture of yourself
2. Proof of tribal enrollment
3. Essay Requirement:
Please write a one to two page essay on the history of your "non-federally" recognized tribe at the Indian Boarding schools. Please utilize the helphaskell.org website and any other sources you may be aware of to complete your essay.
4. A current university or junior college transcript
5. And the following information:

The recipient(s) will receive $250 and a certificate. The recipient's names will also be on a permanent plaque displayed in the MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians Cultural Center & Museum.
